Expecto Patronum foot tattoos

Lettering · Other · Mixed · Photo

Two bare feet rest on a black leather couch, each with a blue outline animal tattoo on the upper foot: a stag with branching antlers on the left and an animal head on the right. The words Expecto and Patronum are set in black lettering beneath the designs, with the blue linework and black text giving a clean, graphic look. The feet fill the frame against a dark background, with the tattoos evenly balanced across the two sides.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The loaves had been in the proving cabinet since two, and Nell Abernethy had been trying to find a happy memory since half past three. She stood at the steel bench with flour to her elbows and the spell ready on her tongue, and every time she reached for something warm, it slid out of her hands like wet dough. Her first day at the ovens. Her gran's kitchen in Whitby with the radio on. Each one came out as a thin grey nothing, a breath on a cold window.

Mr Pryce, who had run the bakery on Fenner Lane for forty years and had never once raised his voice at a tin, rinsed a tray at the sink and didn't look round. "You're reaching for the memory you think you ought to have," he said. "Nobody's impressed by the one in the photograph."

So she stopped trying. She thought instead of the moor road the winter she was nine, when a stag had stepped out of the bracken ahead of the bus, frost smoking from its nostrils, and looked straight at her through the glass without running. She had been frightened and then not frightened at all, and she had never told anyone how long that moment lasted. She lifted her hand and said the words quietly, the way you'd speak to something that might bolt.

Silver came out of her, then a shape, then a stag built from the steam rising off the cooling racks. Its antlers caught the light from the high window. It walked the length of the bench, stepped over a tray of rolls without touching one, and paused at the back door where the first bus was swinging its headlamps across the glass.

Pryce turned off the tap. "Well," he said, drying his hands. "Mind the crust." Behind him, in the cabinet, the bread finally began to rise.
