Matching feather tattoos on two feet

Realism · Other · Mixed · Photo

Two feathers are tattooed on the tops of a pair of bare feet, angled diagonally from the instep towards the toes. The feathers have dark grey shaded linework with soft purple highlights along the barbs and quills. The feet are photographed on a dark mat against a light background, with the tattoos as the clear focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The landlady at Marram House kept a biscuit tin of loose feathers on the hall table, and nobody was allowed to tidy it. I had been a lodger there for three weeks the August Ada Penhaligon came down the stairs with her case strapped shut and asked me to walk with her to the headland before the tide turned. She said it the way you'd ask for the salt.

Her sister Nell had found the first starling feather on the cliff path the summer they were eleven, a long dark wing quill that showed purple when the sun caught it and grey when it didn't. They each took one from the same scatter of feathers under the gorse, and every August after that they came back to look for another. Nell never came back. Ada had brought her own feather in an envelope marked with her handwriting, and she didn't open it on the way down the path.

At the rocks below the old coastguard station the water had pulled back into glassy pools. Ada knelt, unfolded the envelope and held the feather flat on her palm. The barbs lifted in the breeze and the purple came up through the grey like a bruise running the other way. She didn't say Nell's name. She only asked whether I thought it would sink or float.

I said it would probably float a while and then go wherever the current wanted. She laughed, said that was the answer Nell would have given, and set it on the water. We watched it turn once, then slide out past the pool toward the lighthouse, catching the light the whole way until I could no longer tell it from the glare.
