Black line wave and small cat on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A foot and lower leg against a black background show a single-line tattoo in black ink. A long, sweeping wave runs from the ankle up the shin, and a small outlined animal figure, possibly a cat, sits near the ankle bone above a short curved stroke. The linework is thin and unshaded, and the composition leaves most of the frame dark.

The tom came aboard at Oban with the fish boxes, a grey thing with one torn ear, and by the second night he had claimed the lip of the galley range as though he'd paid the harbour dues himself. Mrs Haddow swore he was bad luck. I said he was the only soul on the Morven Lass who sat still long enough to be counted, and she told me to mind my pastry.

That week the swell came in long and patient, the kind that lifts the hull up a grey hill and lets it slide down the back of it. I'd wedge the flour tin against the rail and watch the wake lift off the stern in one clean curve, thin as a pencil stroke, before the sea closed over it. The cat would sit on the sill with his tail wrapped round his feet and watch the same curve, and I never once saw him blink at it.
On the last night out of Stornoway the boat rolled hard and the tray of scones went over. The tom came down off the range in one low movement and walked straight through the spilled flour, leaving a trail of neat marks across the steel table that ran from the sink to the hatch and stopped. I swept the lot into the bin the next morning and meant to scold him for it.
By the time we tied up at Oban again he had gone ashore without a word, and only the marks were left, faint and pale, where his feet had gone the way the sea goes, out of the galley and over the side.
