Two feet on a wooden floor, each with a fine line heart of scrollwork and the word sisters in script near the ankle, one in red and one in green.

Matching heart sisters tattoos on two feet

Fine line · Ankle · Mixed · Photo

Two bare feet rest on a wooden floor, each showing a matching tattoo of a heart made from black scrolling linework with the word love inside it. The word sisters runs down from the heart in a flowing script, coloured red on the left foot and green on the right. The tattoos are small and centred on the top of each foot, with the toes and painted nails visible at the bottom of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lamplighter of Crossmere Lane had two daughters who could not be told apart by their mother's eyes, only by the colour of the ink on their feet. Red for the elder, green for the younger, and both of them had the heart with its black scrolls curling inside like the tendrils of a fern in a cellar. Ivy Harrow ran the bakery at the corner, and every night she left the back door unbolted so the girls could come in from the rain without knocking.

One winter the river rose over the towpath and cut the lane in two. The elder, Nell, was on the far side with the carter's boy when the water came. Her sister Rosa stood on the near bank with a lantern and nothing else, because the flood had taken the rope they had tied to the willow. Rosa did not shout. She walked the length of the wall until she found the iron ring her father had sunk into the stone years before, and she pulled a length of wet washing line through it, knotted it twice, and threw the end across.

Nell caught it on the third throw. They crossed hand over hand with the water at their knees, and when they reached the bakery door Ivy was already there, holding it open with her shoulder. She counted their feet by lamplight, as she always did, and found the two hearts still dark and dripping on the white skin above the toes.

In the morning the washing line hung from the ring, stiff with silt, and nobody took it down. Rosa said it was for the next time, and her sister said there would not be a next time, and they both knew they were lying.
