Expecto patronum lettering on a lower leg

Lettering · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a black script tattoo reading expecto patronum on the outer side of a lower leg, with the words running diagonally upwards. The lettering is in a dark, even ink with a clean, thin stroke and soft shading. Beside the leg, a bearded figurine in a brown coat and red and yellow scarf holds a small cage containing a white owl, and the warm, slightly blurred background sits behind them.

The owl had been bought for the price of a ewe and a promise, and Maud Corrigan wanted it back before the fog came up off the marsh. Old Tobias Rudd was already waiting at the gate when she reached it, his great black beard tucked into a red and gold scarf, a wire cage hanging from one fist like a lantern that had forgotten how to glow.

'It's gone into the Hollow Wood,' he said, without looking at her. 'Things go quiet in there after dark. Owls go quiet first.' He lifted the cage so the bird inside turned its round face towards the lamp. It was white as candle wax and plainly furious. 'You'll need the words if you mean to fetch it.'

'Say them loud,' he told her, 'and say them like you mean them. Not a question. Nobody ever got anything back from the edge of a wood by asking nicely.' She said them into the fog, and her voice came back to her cracked and small, then steadier, the way a bell steadies after its first ring. Somewhere among the alders something answered with a beat of wings.

She came out at first light with the owl perched on her shoulder, its claws pricking through her coat. Tobias had gone home. The cage sat at the bottom of the lane, its little door hanging open on one hinge. She picked it up, set it on the gatepost and left the door as it was, then went in to put the kettle on, since the bird had decided to stay and that, she supposed, was answer enough.
