Explore script on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a flowing, cursive script word, explore, in black ink across the inner forearm. The linework is fine and even with a few looping strokes, and the letters are solid black with no shading or colour. The arm fills the left and centre of the frame against a soft grey background, with a second hand gently holding the wrist from the lower right.

You will want to know about the wall. Mr Okafor from number nine has finally agreed that the bramble on our side can be cut back, provided we leave the old pear tree alone, which suits me fine since the pear is the only thing in that garden that ever bore fruit without fuss. I went through the gap in the hedge on Tuesday and found a path nobody had walked since the war, worn to a thread under the nettles, running straight towards the shed. I followed it to the end. There was a bench, a rusted watering can, and a single tulip gone wild and orange against the brick.
So I have decided to stop waiting for you to come back and see it. Bring your good boots and your stubbornness. We will clear the path together, the way we used to clear the chicken run, and you can tell me again why you never wanted to stay in one town for longer than a year. I am writing this at the table with the window open and the tulip's petals on the sill. Come on Saturday. Bring the spade you borrowed in 1998.
