Paper plane and LET GO on a hand
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo on the hand shows a paper plane, a simple stick figure and a dashed line leading to the words LET GO. The linework is thin and even, in black ink against pale skin on a plain white background. The design sits near the side of the hand and wrist, with the arm extending to the right edge of the frame.

Dad folded the planes at the kitchen table with the radio on, creasing each wing with his thumbnail as if he were smoothing a letter. I was seven that summer and decided the highest place in the world was the far side of that fence.

Every evening we stood by the water butt and he showed me the run-up. Feet apart, arm back, eyes on the gap between the apple tree and the shed. "Don't throw it," he said. "Let it go. The plane knows the way better than you do." I thought he was being clever. I threw every one hard and watched them dive into the nettles, and Mum would call from the back door that dinner was getting cold.
The last plane we made was the only one that flew. It rose over the fence, dipped once above the leeks, and kept going until the evening light caught its underside and it was gone. I stood there with my arm still raised, the way you do after someone has left a room, and then I looked down at my open hand and found I wasn't angry about it at all.
