Mags had been watching the lay-by since the sun cleared the ridge, and the lorry with the cracked windscreen had not moved in two hours. She sat on the bonnet of her van with a flask between her knees, counting the vultures that turned over the cutting where the old road bent away towards the salt flats.

The man who owned the lorry was called Dessie, and he had sold her a heart for thirty pounds in a town that had no name on the map. It was tin, she thought, painted to look like velvet, with a lace edge worked in black and an eye set in the middle that never blinked. Dessie said it was for watching the road. Mags had taken that for a joke until the third night, when headlights came up out of the dust and stopped at the edge of her fire, and the eye on the heart seemed to follow them.

Now the lorry's door opened. Dessie climbed down slowly, one hand on the rail, and looked not at her but at the road behind him, where a column of dust was rising like a second road standing on its end. Three drops of water ran down the eye's cheek, then three more. She had never seen it weep before.

Mags poured the last of the tea onto the sand and stood up. "Tell me what it saw," she said, "and I'll tell you whether to drive."
