Hamsa hand with eye on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A hamsa hand fills the frame, with a teardrop-shaped panel and a detailed eye with shaded iris at its centre. The fingers and surrounding areas are filled with intricate ornamental linework, dotted borders and fine shading. The tattoo is shown in black and grey ink against lighter skin, with a white surface and dark fabric visible in the background.

Dear Nell, the big top came down in Doncaster on Tuesday and nobody cried except the elephant, which we are told was only sneezing. I am writing from the back of the caravan with the lamp turned low, because Mr Vasey has finally sold the calliope and I cannot bear to look at the empty wagon.

You asked in your last letter whether I still keep the hand. I do. It hangs above the trunk where the wardrobe mistress used to pin her patterns, the one Pilar stitched onto the lining of my knife-throwing vest the winter we wintered in Hull. Five fingers of black thread, the filigree gone soft as lace, and in the centre a single eye she shaded so carefully the lashes look wet. She said it was for watching the target, and the crowd, and the man who owns the paper, all at once.

Last night a boy from the rail yard came to the ticket table with a sack of coins and asked whether the show would be back in spring. I told him the truth, that Vasey has signed the ground over to a supermarket. He nodded as if I had given him the time. Then he looked past me at the hand, pinned now above the lamp, and I swear the eye held him as long as it held anyone.

I am not superstitious, Nell, but I have decided to take the hand to Pilar's sister in Leeds before the lorries come. Someone should be watching over the things we made. The train leaves at seven and I have packed the trunk twice already.
