All-seeing eye mandala on forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large ornamental tattoo covers the inner forearm, centred on an eye set inside a triangle with a shaded iris and highlight. Below and around it, mandala-style medallions, swirls, leaves and scalloped borders are built up from fine stippled dots and clean linework. The design is entirely in black and grey ink and fills the frame against a plain light skin tone, with a dark curtain and wooden floor in the background.

The snow has been at the Sallow Gate since Tuesday, and by the third night the drifts stand higher than the stable door, so nobody is leaving and nobody new is arriving. You take the lamp from its hook and climb to the attic where Mrs Pell keeps the ledger, the one with the brass eye pressed into its spine and a triangle of tarnish around it.

She taught you the rule the summer you came up the pass with a single bag: the eye sees, the book remembers, and the porter only counts. Every name goes in with the hour it came through the door. Tonight there are eleven names in the book and twelve beds made, because the twelfth belongs to a man who walked in out of the white with no name at all, only a coin he turned over and over between his fingers.
You sit beside him by the stove. He has frost in his eyebrows and a patient way of watching the warped light through the window, where the ice has grown into rings, petal inside petal, like the rosettes stamped on the old coaching tokens. You ask what he would like to be called. He says the mountain will tell him when the road opens. You write nothing down.
At dawn the plough bell rings somewhere down the valley. When you climb back to the attic the ledger lies open at a clean line, and the brass eye on its spine has gone dull with frost. You enter the stranger's name as Nobody Passed, close the cover, and go down to draw the bolt on the door.
