Black and grey tattoo of an eye within a triangle above the words Ladies Love Outlaws, on the forearm near the elbow.

Eye in triangle with lettering on arm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a tattoo showing an eye inside a triangle with concentric rings around it, above the hand-lettered phrase LADIES LOVE OUTLAWS in black capitals. The linework is bold and slightly uneven, with some soft shading inside the triangle, and the design fills the centre of the frame against a dark background. Another tattoo with fine linework is partly visible at the left edge.

Dear Tom,

The Pennant Brothers' Travelling Fair pulled into Wexcombe on Thursday, and Mam has finally stopped asking after you. Dad's old caravan is still parked behind the dodgems with the triangle painted on its door, the one with the eye in it that he swore kept the bailiffs off. Nobody believes that, but nobody has dared to paint over it either.

Last night a man in a green waxed coat bought three tickets for the Wall of Death and then stood at the rail for the whole show, counting the riders on his fingers. Afterwards he asked Jessamy at the candyfloss stall whether the girls on the ride were really the outlaws. She pointed at the chalk board, which says LADIES LOVE OUTLAWS in letters that get smaller every week, and he laughed so hard he dropped his change in the sawdust. Jessamy says he's a copper from Taunton. She says it like a joke, but she hasn't stopped checking the lane since.

Here is what I meant to tell you. The eye on the door was never Dad's. It was Granddad's, scratched into a tin plate the year he lost the fair to the council, and it has travelled with us ever since, rubbed smooth at the edges. Last week I found it wrapped in your old school jumper at the bottom of the trunk. I think you left it on purpose. I've hung it back on the door where it belongs, and tomorrow we go north.

Come if you can. Bring a clean shirt and something to pay the ferryman.

Love, Eve
