Black script lettering reading He walks with me on the top of a foot near the ankle, in a fine lettering style.

Script quote on the ankle

Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot is raised against a white slatted cabinet, showing a black script tattoo that reads He walks with me followed by an ellipsis, running across the top of the foot near the ankle. The lettering is cursive with smooth, even strokes and mostly uniform thickness, and the ink appears dark grey to black on the skin. The composition is a close, casual snapshot with the text as the clear focal point and a pink toenail and purple caps in the background.

Dearest Nell, you will think I have lost my wits, but the gasworks lamps are all lit now and I walk home past them without fear, because Tom Ackroyd lights the last of them at ten and then takes the lane with me. He never offers his arm. He just falls into step a yard off, cap in his hand, and when the wind comes off the canal and I start to hurry, he says the same thing every night, low and sure: He walks with me. Not you walk with him, nor I walk with you, only the plain fact of it.

Mother asked me last Sunday whether he has spoken for me, and I told her he has not, which is true, though he has said a great many other things that are just as unspoken. He mends the pump in our yard without being asked. He left a cabbage on the step at Christmas with no card. Yesterday at the corner he stopped under the lamp he had just lit and said he would be on nights until spring, and then he would be asking for my hand, if the foreman could spare him, and I was not to answer until he had finished the sentence.

Now here is the strange part. This morning the corner lamp was dark. Mrs Pellow says there was no lamplighter on the rota at all, and no Ackroyd on the books since the explosion in March. I went down the lane anyway at ten with my lantern and walked it alone, saying his words aloud to keep my courage up, and I heard boots keeping time beside me all the way to our gate.

I am sending you the ticket from the Whit fair with his name pencilled on the back. Keep it safe. If I do not write again, know that I did not stop walking.
