The reunion was held in the same assembly hall, and someone had hung the old honours board crooked above the tea urn. I found Mr Pryce beside it, turning a stub of chalk over in his fingers as if the lesson might start again if he kept his hands busy. Nobody called him Pryce now. We were all forty-odd, and he was the only one of us who had never left the town.

Every Thursday in the fifth form he drew a single shape on the blackboard and made us prove something about it before the bell. The triangle always came first. Three straight lines that could not be bent, he said, and yet they could hold up a roof or sink a ship depending on how you set them. Half the class copied his figures into exercise books and the other half copied the way he tapped the board when he wanted silence.

I asked him what had happened to the wooden set square he used to keep in his jacket. He laughed and said the caretaker had put it on the bonfire in 1979, along with a decade of lost homework. Then he told me, quite seriously, that the week he retired he had had the same three angles inked somewhere nobody would see, so the shape would follow him out of the building rather than stay behind on the slate.

I left him to the urn and the crooked board. On the train home I drew a small triangle in the condensation on the window and watched it run and blur, and found it was the one thing from that school I still knew how to close.
