Eye of Horus tattoo on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small black Eye of Horus symbol sits on the side of a finger, drawn in clean, thin linework with minimal shading. The ink is solid black and the outline is crisp against the skin. A gloved hand appears at the left edge, and the hand with dark red nails rests on a pale lilac paper sheet.

The first hard frost came early to Hollin Farm that year, and Old Amos Rudd went out before light to count the ewes in the bottom field. The lamb pens smoked with breath and straw. Something had been taking the new lambs from the hurdles, one a night, and nobody had found a fox track or a dog's print in the snow.

His granddaughter Tess, nine years old and stubborn as a gatepost, kept watch from the byre window with a lantern turned low. She had her grandmother's bread knife across her knees and a stub of carpenter's pencil in her pocket. On the third night a shape came over the wall, long and low, and it made no sound at all. Where its eyes should have been there was only a pale shine, like frost catching the moon.
Tess did not run. She climbed down, crossed the yard, and drew on the planks of the nearest hurdle the eye her grandmother had painted above the byre door for as long as anyone could remember: the brow, the curling tail, the teardrop beneath. Her hand shook, and the line came out crooked, but she pressed hard. The lantern light caught the wood. The shape stopped at the wall, lowered its head towards the drawing, and then turned and went back over the stones the way it had come.
In the morning Amos found the lambs all counted and the byre door unbarred. On the hurdle the crooked eye had been gone over in black, every line sharp and clean, though nobody in the house admitted to doing it. He left it there, and that spring the ewes lambed without loss.
