Infinity and heart on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a small tattoo on the side of a finger, showing an infinity loop with a tiny heart sitting inside its right-hand curve. The linework is thin and dark, with a dotted or stippled quality in places, and the design is entirely black with no shading or colour. The hand rests on a plastic-wrapped surface, and the composition centres the tattoo against the blurred background.

Dear Tom, the beans have finally climbed past the top of the cane wigwam, which means I have had to borrow Mrs Okafor's ladder again, and she has started calling it our ladder. You will want to know whether I have kept the bed where Ruth put it. I have. I dug the same trench on Sunday, and the worms were as furious about it as she used to be.

The seed packet is still in the shed drawer, the one with her handwriting on the front: Scarlet Emperor, sow after frost, and underneath in smaller letters, do not let Tom near the compost. I laughed out loud at that, alone in the potting shed with a mouthful of tea gone cold. Then I found the green twine she used to tie the canes, knotted in a figure of eight that never came undone, and I spent an hour trying to pick it apart before I understood that I didn't want to.

I am writing because the vine has done something odd. Where two shoots crossed by the third cane they have wound round each other in a long figure lying on its side, and inside the lower curve a single tendril has curled into a little knot shaped like a heart. Mrs Okafor says it is just the plant being a plant. I think Ruth would have called it showing off. I have left it alone, and I am not picking the beans from that corner until they are too big to eat, which you will say is sentimental.

Come up in August and bring your secateurs. We will pick the loop clean together, then go back to the drawer for the seeds and sow them again, because that is what she would have done. The thing about a loop, as she once told me while untangling a fishing line, is that you can always start from any point on it. Love, Jen.
