Small fine line circle on the foot
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A hand with black nail polish holds a bare foot against a white background, and a small tattoo sits on the top of the foot near the ankle. The tattoo is a thin black outline of a circle with a small inner mark, drawn with delicate, even linework. The ink is black and grey, and the composition is close and centred on the foot, with black trousers visible at the edge of the frame.

The lens is cracked along one curved edge, a fracture like a hairline on a teacup, and the Board's man from Hull says nobody within a hundred miles can mend it. So it is me who climbs the stairs now, with the paraffin and the chamois, and me who counts the hundred and twelve steps twice each evening to be sure of them.

I found the small brass ring in the drawer of the tide tables, the one you pressed into my palm the summer you left. Inside it is a little dot where the spare wick was cut from a candle. I have been thinking that a light is only a circle someone keeps drawing around the dark, night after night, until the sea remembers where the rocks are.
Mrs Pardoe brought soup on Thursday and said the village had seen the beam from the cliff road and it had looked strange, too steady, as if it were trying to say something. I laughed and told her it was only my hands shaking on the lamp.
Come home when the boat docks. I will have the lens half mended by then, I hope, with glue and patience and copper foil from the chandler's. If you cannot come, leave a lantern unlit on the mainland side and I will know you are still counting too.
Love, Ellie
