Eye tattoo on lower leg
Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A person stands on a speckled stone floor wearing a white ribbed skirt and white trainers, with the lower leg in view. A black ink tattoo of an open eye with a spiral iris and upward lashes sits on the calf. The linework is thin and clean, with the iris shaded in solid black and little greying, and the photo is shot from above at a close angle.

Gather in, gather in, and mind the generator cable, it has bitten better men than you. Now, see that painted eye above the ticket hatch of Brannigan's Wonderground? Ugly thing, I grant you. Lashes turned up like a cat's whiskers, and a spiral in the iris going round and round, so you'd swear it was thinking. Nobody paints an eye like that by accident.

Old Ezra Brannigan painted it himself the summer his wife ran off with a ventriloquist from Dunstable. He said the eye would watch the takings, and the takings would never walk off in a coat pocket again. And it did watch. Every night the spiral turned slow as a clock hand, counting pennies, and every morning the till came up short by exactly what the eye had decided was owed. Wages went missing. Tent poles bent in the night. The girl who swept the sawdust, Mabel Quill, came to him one wet October asking why her pay envelope was always empty.
She didn't argue with it. She sat on the bottom step of the big wheel with a pot of gold size and a fine brush, and she painted a name into the spiral, slowly, letter by letter, her own. The eye blinked, once, and its lashes trembled, because an eye can only look at one thing at a time, and now it was looking at her.
Next morning the hatch was shut, the lashes wet with dew, and the whole fair had packed up and gone south without a soul noticing one broom had stayed behind. Mind you, if you ever find yourself in a field where the grass grows in circles, don't look up. It'll know your name by the time you do.
