Mandala tattoo on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A bare lower arm rests on a bent knee, showing a black mandala tattoo with fine linework and radiating geometric petals on the forearm near the elbow. The rest of the frame shows white sneakers, sunglasses, a gold-toned watch, stacked rings and bracelets, green leaf-print shorts and a dark leather jacket on pale concrete steps. The tattoo is in black ink with grey shading, and the overhead composition makes it a small detail within a lifestyle shot.

Dear Nan,

The lift in Harrow Court has been broken since Tuesday, so I've been taking the stairs down to the bins every morning, and on Thursday I found Precious Okafor sitting on the bottom concrete step with her sunglasses pushed up on her head, drawing circles on the pavement with a stick of chalk. Not wonky ones either. She'd tied a length of string to a nail in the wall and used it like a compass, and then sixteen petals fanned out from the middle of each circle, because she said eight looked like a biscuit.
I asked why bother when the rain would have it off by teatime. She said her gran taught her that you draw a mandala to get the mind to sit still, and the rain was just part of the lesson. She's off to Leeds in a fortnight to start at the college, and she wanted one finished on the steps before she goes. Her leather jacket was slung over the railing and her white trainers were scuffed grey at the toes, and she hummed the same two bars over and over while she worked.
It rained on Friday, as forecast. I went down at seven expecting nothing but a smudge, and the outer petals had blurred into the grey, but the centre was still sharp, a small dense star no bigger than a saucer. Precious wasn't there. There was only a note held down by a loose brick on the bottom step: Keep the middle, Ade. The rest is just the walk in.
Love, Ade
