Dark shaded tattoo on a forearm, denim jacket selfie
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman in an oversized distressed denim jacket with patches and grey drawstring shorts takes a mirror selfie with a white smartphone, her face out of frame. A dark, shaded tattoo sits on her forearm above a gold wristwatch, with its details only partly visible. The image is mostly fashion-focused, with a plain white background, gold jewellery and white sneakers.

Dolores Finch stitched the first patch onto the left cuff on a Tuesday, under the strip light in the back room at Ropers Market, with a mouthful of pins. The canvas came from an old shipping sack that still smelled of cloves. She had bought the jacket for four pounds from a man who swore it had been to Glasgow and back, and she believed him because the shoulders were stiff in the way only long travel makes them.

By Friday the stall was crowded with students who wanted the worn look without the work. Dolores charged them forty pounds for a tear she had made in ten seconds with a wire brush and a grudge against her landlord. She liked the jacket best when someone else wore it, because it looked like it had a past, and she could invent one for it whenever a customer asked.
In March a boy called Tomas came back with the jacket folded over his arm. His mum had found a letter in the inside pocket, creased into a square no bigger than a stamp, addressed to someone called Ruth. Dolores had no memory of it. She had bought the jacket from a woman in Lewes who said nothing at all, only pressed the coins into her palm and turned back to her kettle.
Dolores unfolded the paper under the strip light. It was a shopping list in pencil: bread, thread, a lighter, and then, underlined twice, 'tell her about the sea'. She folded it back along the same creases, slipped it into the pocket where it had lain for years, and sewed the torn seam shut with navy thread, for once making it perfectly neat.
