Eye tattoo with 'I'm still fond of you' lettering
Traditional · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey eye with lashes and a dotted, stippled iris sits at the centre of the image, with the words I'M STILL FOND OF YOU set above and below it in bold block lettering. Partial tattoos of a winged, web-patterned shape appear at the top edge and a bottle-like shape at the bottom edge. The photograph is in black and white, with the arm filling the frame and the linework and shading kept crisp.

The lift at Harrow Court had been broken since March, so I took the stairs with the shopping looped over my wrists, counting landings the way you'd count down a fuse. Mrs Adeyemi on four had left her radio on again, a man on nine was arguing with someone about a parking space, and the stairwell smelled of bleach and somebody's dinner. By the time I reached eleven I was out of breath and cross with myself for being out of breath.

The note was pinned under my peephole, same as the last three. Biro, block capitals, pressed hard enough to dent the paper. I'M STILL FOND OF YOU, with a little eye drawn in the corner, lashes and all, the way Callum used to doodle on receipts, beer mats, the backs of my hands. No name. He never signed anything. He said a signature was just a way of asking to be believed, and he didn't need to be believed, he needed to be looked at.
I stood there a long time with the bags cutting into my fingers. Through the peephole the landing looked small and curved and wrong, like the inside of a spoon. Somewhere below, the lift finally groaned awake and then went quiet again, as if it had thought better of it.
I peeled the note off the door, smoothed it against my thigh and put it in the shoebox on the wardrobe with the others. Then I went to the window, flicked on the stairwell light across the walkway so whoever was out there could see it was still on, and left it burning all night.
