Realistic eye tattoo on an arm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large, highly detailed eye sits across the arm, with the iris, pupil, catchlight and upper and lower lashes rendered in fine strokes. The shading moves smoothly from deep black in the lash line and pupil to soft grey across the iris and sclera, giving a lifelike, three-dimensional effect. The tattoo fills most of the frame against a softly blurred, pale background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ada Pell had mended glass eyes above a chemist's in Hebden Bridge for forty years, and she rarely looked twice at any of them. The parcel that arrived on a wet Tuesday held one brown glass eye on a bed of yellowed cotton wool, its iris crazed with hairline cracks like a pond after the first frost. Her nephew Tom wanted it binned. The postmark had been rubbed away and the sender had written only "for the girl who keeps the lamp lit" on the brown paper.

She worked on it through the lamplit evenings with a loupe screwed to her brow and a brush no thicker than a hair. She filled the cracks with enamel, laid down the ink of the pupil, then the grey of the sclera, and last of all the lashes, one stroke at a time, bending each to look as though it had been combed. The catchlight she painted high and to the left, a small white window, the way her father had taught her so the eye would seem to be waiting for someone to come through a door.

On the third night she set it on the sill to dry and saw that the window in the glass had changed. Across the street a gas lamp was burning in a shop that had been dark for years, and in the reflection, small and pale, a woman stood on the pavement looking up at her. Ada did not turn around. She picked up the eye between finger and thumb, wrapped it, and wrote on the box in her firm hand: returned, address unknown. In the morning the box was gone from the step, and the sill was empty except for a single lash, curved like a question mark, stuck to the wood.
