Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic eye with detailed lashes, shaded iris and a small hand shape visible within the pupil area, drawn across the inner forearm. Two or three black characters sit above the eye in a bold, blocky style. The shading is soft and greyscale, and the photograph has a warm, sepia-toned cast against a plain pale background.

On the island of Hallen, where the ferry came twice a week when the wind allowed, the old people said the sea kept a watch. It did not watch with gulls or fish but with a single eye cut into the rock below the chapel, with lashes of black weed and an iris the colour of wet slate. Every boat that left the harbour was looked at, and the looking was what brought it home.

Brannoch Vael, who mended nets for the cannery, did not believe any of it. One March he rowed out alone to fetch a drifting creel, and the weather turned faster than the gulls had warned. He shouted for the eye, though his grandmother had told him never to call on it. A small pale hand rose out of the dark water in the place where the pupil should be, fingers spread, and pushed his boat back toward the slipway. He came home with raw palms and no creel.

The next morning he climbed to the chapel with a cold chisel and a tin of black paint. Above the eye he painted three blocky characters that the travelling ink-man had once shown him on a card, though nobody on Hallen could read them. Then he made his bargain in the only language the rock seemed to hear: he would never again pass the skerry without telling someone where he was going.

He kept the promise for forty years. When his own boat was finally brought in, the harbourmaster found the paint above the rock eye freshly touched up and a hand-shaped print pressed into the wet stone. The fishermen still walk past the chapel on the way to the boats, and they lay a palm flat on the rock beneath the eye, one by one, the way you touch a doorframe before you leave a house you mean to return to.
