Eye in a triangle on the inner arm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black and grey tattoo of a detailed eye with defined lashes, a brow and a shaded iris sits inside an upright triangle outline. The linework is fine and the shading is built up with stippled texture around the eyelid and iris. The tattoo is centred on pale skin against a dark, out-of-focus background.

The Chancellor wanted the eye smaller than the last one, so I cut it at the foot of the bronze where the lamp could barely reach, and I cut every lash by hand with a needle-point no thicker than a hair.

In Orrun the Council seal has hung over every gate since my grandmother's time: an upright triangle, and inside it an eye that sees everything the city does. My master, Teodor Asch, taught me that an eye drawn well is harder to forgive than a sword. He had cut the old seal himself, shading the iris with a thousand tiny dots so the bronze looked wet. When his hands started shaking, I finished the brows for him, and he pretended not to notice.

The new warrant came on a Tuesday with a name I knew from the Lower Wards. Hanne Oyelaran, a dyer's widow, had hidden a letter from the Chancellor's own clerk inside a loaf of rye, and the baker's boy had been paid to say so. The Chancellor wanted her name pressed into wax beneath the eye, the way he wanted everything: watched.

I went back to the bench. Teodor's old drawing lay under the lamp, and I saw I had been copying his eye for ten years without once looking at what it was doing. It was not glaring. It was patient, the lid drooping a little, as if it had already seen how the argument would end. I cut the new seal to match, lids heavy, the iris left a shade too soft. When the Chancellor pressed it into the wax, the eye looked back at him, and he could not tell whether it was watching or sleeping.
