Eye with a dripping drop
Mixed · Flash
A bold, solid silhouette of a stylised eye with a white almond-shaped eyelid and a crescent iris, set in a sharp diamond-like outline. The shape tapers downward into a long drip ending in a rounded droplet. The fill is a smooth vertical gradient from near-black at the top to bright red at the base, on a plain white background.

Nobody on Harrow Deep trusts a clean sky, so the Watch keeps its eye on the dome instead. I was sent up the ladder at dawn with a tin of lamp-black and a brush the length of my forearm, because the glass over the north hatch had clouded and someone had to repaint the seal before the pressure gauge turned red.

Old Wenna talked the whole climb. She had painted that seal twice in her life and lost a fingertip the first time, when the glass cracked under her knee. 'Start with the lid,' she said, 'then let the drip run. The drip is what tells the dome you are still watching.' I asked why a drop and not a line. She laughed and said a line can be ruled off, but a drop has to fall somewhere.
The brush went wrong at the corners, as it always does. The almond shape wandered and the crescent came out thick as a thumbnail. Below us the lamps of the lower decks went out one by one as the night shift shut their hatches. I painted the iris last, as she had taught me, and the black ran down the glass and gathered at the bottom in a long red-brown thread that the sealant drank slowly, like something that had been waiting.
When I climbed down, the gauge needle had settled to green. Wenna was not there. Her tin sat on the bottom rung with its lid off, and beside it lay a second brush, dipped and dry, with a note in her cramped hand: Paint the drop longer next time. It gets heavier the further it falls. I stood there a long while, looking up at the seal, and understood the dome had never been watched by the eye at all, only by whoever was willing to climb up and keep it open.
