Eye with Don't Look Back lettering
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A stylised eye in cream on a dark purple-black background, with the words DON'T LOOK BACK written along the shape of the eyelid and outline. The iris is made of concentric rings that fade toward a dark pupil at the centre. The design is flat and graphic, with solid shapes and no shading or colour beyond the two tones.

The rental van had stopped sounding like an engine somewhere past the last water tower, and Marisol had stopped pretending she could fix it. She kept both hands on the wheel at ten and two, the way her grandmother had taught her to drive on the flat roads outside Needles, and watched the white centre line unspool into the heat shimmer.

"Don't look back," her grandmother used to say whenever they left a town after dark. It started as a joke, something the old woman muttered to the dog, and then it became the rule for everything: for ex-husbands, for tyres on the verge, for the sound of something following them down the night. Marisol had found the phrase stitched on a tea towel in the glovebox and laughed out loud, alone, at a petrol station where nobody cared.
Somewhere past mile marker forty, the wing mirror began to hold a light. It was small and round and steady, the colour of a cold coin, and it did not overtake. It just stayed, the way a moon stays with a car on a long road.
She looked back. She had always been going to.
The light was not a car. It was the sun, which had been behind her all along, sliding into the flat horizon and pooling in the glass like the iris of an open eye, rings of orange thinning to a dark centre. Her grandmother had never said what happened if you did look. Marisol eased her foot off the accelerator, let the van drift onto the shoulder, and watched the lamp sink until there was only a thin line of gold across the sand.
