Owl sketch with feathers and branches

Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash

A detailed drawing of an owl with a fierce, wide-eyed expression, framed by a dark circular shape and loose ink splatters. Feathers are rendered with heavy, flowing linework and soft shading, while twigs, leaves and a small crescent moon sit around the right side. The sketch is in shades of brown and black on a yellowed background, with no colour ink.

Dear Brother Aldous, the owl came back to the ferry landing last night, the same grey-brown bird that sat on the broken mooring post all through the flood. I did not sleep, so I sat on the step with the lantern and watched her turn her head a full half-circle to look at the crescent moon sliding behind the willows. Mother Harrow says the owls of Sallowmere keep count of every boat that crosses, and that one day they will ask us to account for them.

The miller's girl came down before dawn, soaked to the knees, asking for the ferry. She had walked from the bridge at Quenby with a sack of salt cod and a debt she would not name. I told her the river was high and the boat was sound, which was half a lie. The owl dropped from the alder and landed on the rail between us, feathers ruffled like a furious cook's hat, and the girl went white as lamp wax. I have never seen a bird look so much like a magistrate.

We rowed her across with the mist standing up off the water in ropes. Halfway over the owl lifted off and flew ahead, low, the way a ferryman shows the sandbars. When we reached the far bank there were four twigs laid across the gunwale, each with a single leaf still green. I have kept them in my coat. Come home at Michaelmas and tell me whether the crescent moon was ever a boat too.
