Black ink flash design of a heart wearing headphones, with a heartbeat or sound wave line running down its centre, on white paper.

Heart with headphones and heartbeat line

Black and grey · Flash

A hand-drawn heart outlined in bold black ink wears a pair of headphones, with padded ear cups on each side and a curved headband above. A jagged heartbeat or audio waveform line runs vertically through the middle of the heart, and the point of the heart ends in a small droplet. Soft grey shading along the inner edges gives the heart and headphones some depth against the white background.

The cable ran off the stern winch into four hundred metres of black water. Above her, the wheelhouse clock ticked toward the change of watch, and somewhere below a generator thrummed like a cheap fridge.

She had come aboard to catalogue humpbacks. The captain called her the song lady and didn't mean it kindly, though she had stopped minding. What she wanted was the trace on the laptop: the green line that jumped when a whale called and flattened when nothing answered. Her father had taught her to read a heart monitor that way, long before she understood what she was reading.

Then it came back. A low moan rose out of the speakers, slid up through the register, and broke into the clicks and knocks she had waited a month to hear. On the screen the line leapt, dropped, leapt again, a stammer of peaks like a pulse counted in a dark room.

She didn't call anyone. She pulled the headphones tighter, watched the trace settle into its rhythm, and wrote the time in the log in careful capitals: 0342, SONG RESUMED. Outside, the swell lifted the bow and let it fall, and the ocean kept its own time, steady as a heart that had decided to go on.
