Eye within a ring of stars

Traditional · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a stylised eye with a teal iris and dark pupil, surrounded by radiating lines and a circular grey globe. A ring of multicoloured eight-pointed stars encircles the globe, and the design sits on a decorative base with scalloped bands and petal shapes. Bold black outlines and flat fills in red, yellow, orange and teal are softened by grey shading, and the composition is centred on pale skin with a partly visible tattoo at the right edge.

Hush now, the wind's only after the shutters, and I'll finish about Mother Hallam's glass before the candle goes. You've all seen the thing in the window of the Coach and Lantern, the grey globe on its brass stand with the painted stars going round it like a fair. A penny got you a look. Most folk saw their own red nose in it and went off grumbling.

Then came the winter the Carrow road shut, and a drover called Ned Pike stumbled in with ice in his beard and a debt he'd told nobody about. He slapped a penny on the bar and asked to see what was coming. Mother Hallam didn't bother with the glass. She looked at him over her spectacles and said, 'It's not the future that's looking back, Ned. It's the man you cheated at Wenlow fair.'

Ned bent to the globe anyway. Inside, a single eye opened, teal as a kingfisher's back, with rays spreading out from it like the spokes of a cart wheel. The stars turned once, slow and deliberate, and the pupil found him. He stayed bent over the brass so long the candle guttered twice. When he straightened, he had his purse out and was counting coins onto the bar, every one of them short of what he owed, and he said very quietly that he'd walk to Wenlow in the spring and make it right.

The glass never showed a thing after that, Mother Hallam swore, not even her own face. It only ever wanted an honest look. Now shutter your eyes, and mind the stairs.
