Eyepatch woman and yellow rose on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A woman wearing a dark hat decorated with a yellow flower and an eyepatch fills the upper forearm, with light hair falling beside her face. A yellow rose with black shading sits below her on the outer arm, and a few green leaves show near its base. Bold black outlines, smooth greyscale shading on the face and clothing, and bright yellow and skin-tone fills give the piece a bold, saturated look.

The steward wanted the yellow roses cut back before the frost, but Hester Vane would not let him through the gap in the wall. She stood with her black hat pulled low and the patch over her left eye, and told him the roses had been planted by her mother's hand and would open when they were ready, not a day before.

He was a patient man with a long ledger, so he waited for her to tire. She did not tire. The village said she had lost the eye to a fever as a girl, and that she could see more with the one she had than most could with two. When the steward sent three men with shears on a moonless night, she was sitting on the low stone bench among the bushes with a lantern unlit at her feet. The men found the roses in the dark, but every bloom they touched smelled of wet earth and the lamps of the village below, and when they lifted their blades the petals shone like coins. They went back over the wall without a word, and one of them left his shears behind in the mud.
In the morning the steward came himself and found her asleep on the bench with a rose in her lap and the rusted blades beside her. He asked why she guarded a few bushes that paid no rent. She opened her good eye and said the garden did not belong to whoever held the deed, but to whoever kept it, and she had kept it since she was nine.
He went down the hill without his shears. Each spring after that, the first yellow rose opened at the gap in the wall, and the steward's granddaughter sat beside it with a cup of tea, waiting for it to bloom.
