Colour neo-traditional portrait of a woman in a headscarf with the word Faith on her brow, tattooed on the upper arm.

Woman portrait in headscarf on upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A woman's face in a headscarf is tattooed on the upper arm, with her hand resting against her chest at the lower left. Bold black outlines and soft grey shading model the face and hair, while the scarf is filled with blue and orange and her lips are red. Script lettering reading Faith and what looks like Bethlehem sits on the brow and jaw, with a cloud shape at the top of the frame.

The hull paint was still wet when Mother Oyelaran sent me up the spine of the Lantern to fetch the fine brush. Down on the cargo deck the crew were arguing about the face. Too stern, said Teodor. Too young, said the cook. Nobody could agree on the mouth, so they had left it red, the one colour we had kept back from the dye stores, and called it a promise.

I climbed to the sky-lock with the brush between my teeth and found the woman's name already scratched into the frame in fresh letters. Faith, across the brow. Bethlehem along the jaw, where the old crew had written the name of the first colony we were meant to reach and never did. Someone had drawn a cloud above her headscarf, the way children draw weather, so the ship would know which way to rain.

When they asked me why she kept her hand on her chest, I told them it is how you hold a thing you have decided not to drop. The cloud was for the water recyclers. The blue in the scarf was the sky we lost somewhere past the third burn, and the orange was the light we would find again if the navigators were right. Teodor said that was a lot of meaning for a bit of paint. I said that was all a ship ever is.
