Realistic face and clawed hands on an arm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a sleeve-style tattoo showing a face from the nose down, with heavy black lips and bared teeth rendered in soft greyscale shading. Below, two clawed hands with long talon-like nails frame a dark central area, with thin pale highlight lines curving around them. The shading is smooth and high contrast, and the tattoo fills most of the frame against a blurred indoor background.

Sit closer, the fire only warms the front of you. Yes, the post at Harrow Gap, where the road gives up and turns into a river of gravel. There was a toll-keeper there called Mother Sallow, who kept her lamp lit for every cart that came over the ridge, and she never once asked a traveller's name. She asked only what they had carried across the line without declaring it.

One dusk a carter came up with a crate that rattled though it was supposed to be empty. He'd bought it, he swore, from a glazier in Kettlewick. Mother Sallow looked at him over her spectacles, then lifted the lamp to his face. In that light he saw a mouth with black lips drawn tight and teeth grinning white behind them. His own mouth shut like a purse. She didn't raise her hands. She didn't need to. Her fingers came out of the dark on either side of the lamp, long and grey, nails curved like sickles, and they pressed the lid down without touching it.
What was in the crate? Nobody ever opened it to see. The carter paid his toll in silver and a promise to bring the crate back empty by the next full moon. He did, and every full moon after for thirty years, until the crate grew heavier than any cart could carry and he stopped arguing with the weight.
The road still runs through Harrow Gap. If you go up at dusk you'll see the lamp in the post window, and if the wind comes from the north you'll hear rattling in the ditch. Don't lift any lids. Count the nails on the hands at the gate instead, five a side, and tell me if one is sharper than the rest. That's the one she's keeping for you.
