Fairy and Believe script on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A fine line outline of a fairy in a dancing pose sits above the script word Believe, with small star sparkles scattered around the figure and lettering. The linework is thin and even in dark blue-black ink on pale skin, with no shading or added colour. The design is centred on the inner forearm, photographed close up against a dark background.

The lamp-carrier had been seen three nights running, and by the fourth the whole of Scarrow Fen had stopped laughing at Ada Pell for telling it. She was nine, and she would not stop saying the thing was real, though she had never once managed to catch it. Each dusk it came dancing over the black water on legs as thin as heron feet, trailing its small sparks, and each dawn the reeds were bare again.

Her father mended eel traps and said fairies were for tinkers and fools. Her aunt said they were for people who had nothing better to look at. So on the fifth night Ada went out alone with a jam jar and a candle stub, and she sat on the drowned gate until her fingers went numb. The creature came. It did not look at her. It bent and dipped its hands into the mud where a fallen star had landed and gone grey, and it lifted the star out gently, the way you would lift a moth from a bath, and then it stood there with nothing to hold it up.
Ada understood then that the sparks were not going out. They were going unseen, and what nobody sees goes dark. She held up the jar and said, loudly enough for the whole fen to hear, that she believed in it and that it could come home to her. The creature turned round. The light in the jar brightened until it was a whole sky in glass, and the star rose out of the mud and back up into the dark.
In the morning the mud at the gate was dotted with small cold stars that did not melt. Her father came out with his boots unlaced, looked at them for a long while, and then knelt and counted them one by one with a wet thumb, and he did not tell her they were not there.
