Fairy silhouette on swirling vines

Black and grey · Flash

A solid black silhouette of a winged fairy sits on a tangle of looping vines, with her hair swept up and one leg extended. A small butterfly hovers to the right, and curling tendrils extend outward and downward from the vine base. The design is flat black with no shading, set against a plain white background.

Dear Marguerite, the vines came back over the ferry jetty again last night, thicker than before, and they have bound the bench where your grandmother used to sit with her knitting. I went down with the shears at dawn as you told me to, but the cut stems wept a sap like black ink and the tendrils only tightened around my wrists. I did not panic. I simply stood there in the wet grass until the sun lifted the mist off the water.

The butterfly came first, the way it always does when something is about to shift. It landed on the rail by the boathouse and opened its wings for a long moment, the colour of a bruised plum, and then the fairy stepped out of the tangle as though she had been waiting behind a curtain. She did not speak. She only lifted one bare leg onto the thorny curl of the bench, tipped her head back, and let her hair fall loose, and I understood she was asking for nothing but a little patience from us both.

So I have left the gate open and a saucer of milk on the step, and I have stopped cutting. The mainland will say the island is overgrown. Let them come and see for themselves. Your mother always said the vines remembered who had planted them, and I have decided to believe her. Come home before the ferry runs on Thursday, if you can bear it. The bench is still warm where she sat.
