Fairy with dandelion clock and birds on upper back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black silhouette of a fairy sits on the lower left, holding a dandelion clock with a long stem. Seeds and small birds trail upwards in a curve across the upper back towards the neck, with some seeds drawn as fine outlines. The ink is solid black on a light skin tone, and the composition is a close photograph of the back with no other objects visible.

Mrs Okafor on nine says the council sprayed the verges, but nobody told the weeds.

Yesterday I found one on my balcony rail, a single clock on a long stem, bent over as if it had been carried a long way and set down to rest. I stood there in my slippers for ten minutes working out whether to pick it up. Dad used to say blow on a clock and make a wish, and then you had to let the seeds go, because the wish only counts if you can't take it back. I didn't blow. I just watched the wind take the seeds one by one over the car park, towards the bus shelter, the canal, the roofs of the far estate, and a pair of starlings went up after them as though they were keeping count.
I've enclosed a pressed one. It will be flat as a biscuit by the time this reaches you. Write back and tell me which of your wishes you've let go of, and I'll tell you mine. Don't say the job. I know about the job. Love, Jean
