Star trail tattoo across the back
Back · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo is a scattered trail of small stars, some outlined in black and others filled with pink, purple, teal, red and green. The stars are larger near the centre and right of the image and become smaller and sparser as they drift away across the skin. The pale skin and blurred patterned background with pink birds keep the focus on the tattoo.

Every morning before the bells at St Ebba's, Marta Hollin lit the ovens in the dark and waited for the stars to go out. Her father had taught her that the sky gave up its last lights one at a time, and that a baker who was not up to watch would never know which ones had been lost. He kept a tally on the back of the flour sacks in pencil, little open rings for the ones he had seen fade and filled ones for the ones that burned on past sunrise.

The winter the mill at Coldharbour shut, there was no flour to be had for a fortnight, and the village went hungry without anyone quite saying so. Marta took the last of the rye and the honey from the back shelf and kneaded it with her knuckles until her arms ached. She cut the dough with a tin star her grandmother had made, pressed out dozens of them, and set them on the stone to rise. When the bread came out it was dusted with coloured sugar: pink, violet, teal, and a green like young bracken. Nobody asked where she had found the sugar.
Early on the third morning a cart came down the lane with no driver, only a boy asleep in the straw with his coat wrapped round a sack. Marta gave him a warm star and he ate it without waking. Above the roof the sky thinned, and the last stars went out in a line from the north field right down to the bakery door, like a trail of sparks someone had walked along and forgotten to stamp out.
