Fairydust jar on the forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A jar with a striped lid and a ribbon banner reading FAIRYDUST sits on the upper forearm, drawn in thin black outline. Small star sparkles and dotted speckles fill the glass, and a few short marks suggest the jar's base. The tattoo is shown in black ink only against pale skin, centred on a plain white background.

The jar came up the cut wedged between tins of Gentleman's Relish and a crate of wet candles, and nobody on the Marigold would admit to packing it. Mum said the lock-keeper's girl must have left it on the lock beam. Dad called it a jar of cough sweets gone to nonsense. I only knew it sat on the shelf above the stove, its striped lid catching the lamplight, and that when I held it up to the window the glass seemed full of small, patient stars.

The February we froze in below Cold Harbour Bend, the ice grew so thick the horses stood on it like dogs on a rug. Nothing moved for nine days. On the tenth morning I unscrewed the lid, took a pinch between finger and thumb, and scattered it over the frosted rail. It did not fall the way flour falls. It hung in the air, then settled into the rime and lit it from within, a line of pale sparks running the length of the towpath until the far bank took the light and gave it back.

By the time the thaw came the jar was nearly empty and the ice had gone to grey slush, but the rail still held a faint shimmer if you tilted your head. Dad read the label again and went quiet. He admitted he had bought it from a stall at Stourport for two shillings, and that the man had told him it would last exactly as long as there was someone to share it with. I put the lid back on, a little lighter in the hand, and set it on the shelf where the lamp could find it.
