Gumball machine on the chest

Chest · Colour · Photo

A cartoon gumball machine with a pink dome top, a clear globe full of multicoloured gumballs, and a pink base sits centrally on the skin. The design uses a bold black outline with flat, solid fills in pink, grey and a range of bright candy colours. The tattoo is framed by a pale, loose fabric that a hand pulls open at the bottom of the frame.

Sit closer, the lot of you, the wind's wanting our hats tonight. Now, the glass globe on the harbour wall at Skerrin. You all know it. Pink lid, pink feet, a tin handle worn bright by a hundred years of thumbs. Nobody on Skerrin ever saw a man deliver it. It simply arrived one spring on the back of the ferry, shouting at the gulls.

My grandmother's brother, Tam Corrie, had one penny in the world that April, and he wanted to know which colour the machine would give him. So he fed it the coin and turned the handle, and out rolled a single ball, red as a buoy. It was not the colour he wanted. He tried again. Blue. Then yellow, then a sugar green so bright it made his teeth ache just to look at it.

Every morning after that he went back with a penny he had not got, and every morning the machine gave him a different colour and kept the copper. The island began to talk. The fishwives reckoned it was feeding on us. The minister reckoned it was the devil's sweetshop.

Tam did not care. He said the machine only ever gave what a person was short of. Then one grey Tuesday the globe went empty, every ball gone, and the handle would not turn. Tam sat on the wall until dark. When he finally stood, he found a single pink ball rolling against his boot, from nowhere at all. He put it in his mouth and it tasted of his mother's kitchen. Some say the machine went back on the ferry that week. I say it's still there, waiting for someone short of a little sweetness.
