Small toy brick on the wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a four-stud toy building brick, drawn in black outline with the front face left open. The side of the brick is filled with dense dot stippling, which gives it a shaded, three-dimensional look. The tattoo sits alone on the inner forearm against plain pale skin, with a blurred warm background.

Now hush, because this is the part about the brick, and the brick is the whole of it. The Majestic on the front at Margate had a sprung floor that gave under your feet like a held breath. One Saturday in nineteen seventy-four a boy called Terry Ruddle lost his grey plastic brick through a gap between the boards. He was four. His mother was dancing with a man in a brown suit who smelled of peppermint, and Terry was under the stage steps building a tower with the one brick he had brought, because a tower was the only thing he knew how to finish.

Nobody found it. The caretaker, Mrs Dorothy Pell, swept under that floor for thirty years and never once saw it, because it had slipped down beside a joist and settled in the dust like a sleeping mouse. The dances went on. The Majestic had its last waltz in eighty-one and its walls were knocked through for a supermarket, and the boards came up one by one like the lid of a tin of biscuits.
Dorothy's niece Carol was the one who lifted the last of them. She knelt on the bare joists with a torch in her teeth and found the brick, warm from the sun coming through the skylight, and she turned it over in her palm and said, to nobody at all, 'Well, somebody built something here.' Then she put it in her coat pocket, where it has been ever since, and every so often, when the music starts up somewhere, she feels those four little studs press into her hand like the first bars of a tune.
