Fairytale castle in an ornate gilded frame on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A fairytale castle with pink walls, teal spires and gold accents sits inside an ornate scrolled frame with a blue night sky, pale clouds and a glowing moon behind it. A figure in a red cloak appears at the lower left, with smaller figures and foliage around the base of the frame. The shading is smooth and painterly with bold outlines, and the composition fills an oval frame that wraps around the leg.

Brother Anselm has handed you his old sable brush, its tip worn to a soft point, and told you the gold leaf must be laid before vespers or it will not hold. You are nine days into the frame. Its scrolls curl out from the corners like frost on a pane, and you have stopped counting the leaves because counting makes your wrist ache and your eyes swim.

The castle comes last, after the sky. You mix the pink for its walls from madder and a little chalk, and it looks like the inside of a shell. The spires you paint in verdigris, teal as the pond beyond the infirmary wall, each one tapering to a point the candle makes shine. Nobody in the abbey has seen a castle like this. You have only seen one in a book a travelling merchant left in the almonry, its pages swollen with rain, and you have painted whatever the rain left behind.

On the last night, when the lamp is low, you add a figure at the lower left: a woman in a red cloak, no bigger than a grain of barley. Anselm finds you at it before compline and frowns. Saints do not wear red, he says, and you agree, and paint the cloak anyway. He does not take the brush from you. Instead he stands a long time looking at the window, where the real moon has just cleared the wall and hangs over the frame, pale and round, exactly where you painted one.
