Castle snow globe with a witch on a broom
Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo
A snow globe contains a grey castle with tall spires and a witch on a broom silhouetted against a purple sky with stars and a crescent moon. The globe sits on a base with a gold shield, pink and orange bands, and dotted detailing, all outlined in bold black lines. Bright purple, green, orange and pink fills give the design a classic colour look, photographed on a leg against a white cloth.

The globe had come off a stall at Banbury for a shilling, and Nell Pardoe shook it every morning before she lit the stove, the way her father used to tap the kettle to hear whether there was water in it. Inside, a grey castle stood on its hill under a purple sky, and above it a witch rode her broom across a crescent moon. The snow had mostly settled by then, so the castle looked like it was standing in the middle of a bad dream about weather.

'Witches don't fly,' said her brother Tom, who was nine and certain of most things. 'They fall off.'
'This one's kept up,' Nell said. She set the globe on the shelf above the tiller, where the gold shield on its base caught the lamp. Her father had told her the witch went up every winter to see whether the cut was frozen to the bottom, and that she carried a lantern for any boat still out after dark.
The winter the Ashby boat was late, the canal froze white from Napton to the Coventry arm. Nell sat up with the globe in her lap and shook it hard, the way you shake a lamp to wake the wick, and she asked the witch to bring him home. She didn't know whether it was wishing or only cold hands.
At first light the ice had a clean black line down its middle, the width of a broom handle, and a long way off at the lock her father's boat was tied up, its roof white and its stove smoking. He came up the towpath with a sack over his shoulder and said he had no idea how he'd got through. Nell looked at the globe. There was a fresh dusting of glitter on the purple sky, and the witch had moved a little closer to the moon.
