Castle and fireworks on a thigh
Thigh · Colour · Photo
A turquoise castle with spires and lit windows sits at the bottom of the design, rising against a sky that fades from orange to violet. White and dark fireworks burst across the upper section, with small white stars scattered around them. The shading is soft and painterly, with smooth colour blends in the sky and bright highlights on the castle walls.

The bread had to be out of the oven before the bells, because that was the rule in the town of Harrowmere, and Ada Penrose had never once broken it. Then came the winter the Duke ordered a castle of sugar for the Feast of Lanterns. Nobody had built such a thing, and the cooks laughed at the request until he doubled the purse. Ada was asked to make the towers. She worked through the nights with almond paste and boiled honey, shaping spires no taller than her forearm, and each morning she left them to set on the cold sill where the first light would find them.
On the eve of the feast the castle stood in the square, its turquoise glaze shining where she had brushed on the blue sugar, its windows lit with candle stubs. When the fireworks went up over the rooftops, the sugar towers caught the colours and held them, orange and then violet, and the crowd cheered for the baker who had made the sky look like it was burning. Ada did not cheer. She was already counting loaves for the morning, because the bread was still the bread, and the bells would ring whatever the Duke had built.
