Faith script tattoo on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A hand reaches into a patch of small purple and pink flowers, with the inner wrist turned toward the camera. The word faith is written in thin, black, handwritten-style script running across the wrist. The ink is crisp and even, and the warm, soft natural light and the blurred green foliage behind it keep the focus on the lettering.

Dear Tom,

The verbena has gone wild along the south wall, the way your mother always said it would if nobody stopped it. I have stopped stopping it. Half the bees in the parish are drunk on it by eleven, so don't scold me for the state of the path.

I found the seed packet in the drawer under the tea towels, the one your father wrote on in that spiky pencil of his. Someone had torn the front off, but on the back he'd written a single word and crossed out the rest of the instructions as if they were beneath him. Faith, it said, underlined twice, beside a little drawing of a sprout. I laughed out loud in the empty kitchen. He never once set foot in chapel in forty years, and yet he planted every row of those apple trees as though the ground owed him a favour.

I am sending you the packet. Sow the rest of the seeds in March, not April, whatever the man at the garden centre says. And when the first frost takes the verbena, leave the dead stalks standing for the finches. He would have wanted that, though he would never have said so.

Love, Nan
