Row of elephants on a wrist

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A hand is extended towards the left with the forearm bare and the wrist turned, while the cream knit sleeve covers the upper arm. A line of black elephant silhouettes runs across the wrist, the largest at the left and the smallest in the middle, with the final animal at the right edge near the sleeve. The background is a soft-focus green field in warm, low-angle sunlight.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Bramble had counted the herd every dusk since the rains failed, and every dusk the number came out wrong. Eleven grey backs crossed the dry riverbed in single file, the old cow Nyota at the front with her ears spread like sails, and the youngest calf tucked in the middle where the dust was softest. Bramble walked at the back, because the back was where the trouble always came from.

Tonight the wind had swung round to the north and carried the smell of rain that never arrived. Nyota stopped at the cut bank and lifted her trunk. Little Thandi, the calf, had wandered off after a bright green beetle and was nowhere in the line. Bramble counted once, then twice, then a third time, touching each animal's rump with her stick the way her grandmother had taught her, as if she were telling beads on a string.

She found the calf in the reeds on the far side, standing very still with one foot raised, listening to something Bramble could not hear. "Come on, then," she said, and the calf came, trotting so close that its trunk brushed her sleeve. They walked on together, the last two in a line that now measured twelve.

When they reached the waterhole, Nyota had already lowered herself into the mud. The herd settled in a slow ring around her, and the calf pressed itself against her flank as if it had always belonged there. Bramble sat down in the warm dust, opened her hands, and for the first time in weeks let the count go.
