A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The arrows were my grandfather's idea, not the council's. Every marker post on the Sennet Track had a tin arrow nailed to it, and he kept a tin of black paint in the cab of the grader so he could touch them up after the dust storms scoured them pale. I rode with him the summer I turned sixteen, holding the paint while he leaned out of the window and squinted at the road ahead.

Nobody else used the track by then. The rail spur had closed, and Carrow Flat had shrunk to a petrol pump, a church with no bell and a bakery run by two sisters who never agreed on the bread. What kept the route open was the arrows. You followed them post to post, and they never once lied about which way the water was.

On the last day he let me paint the post at the turn above the salt pan. My hand shook. He laughed and said a steady hand was just a hand that had stopped expecting to be watched. I drew the shaft thin as a hair, then the head, then the fletching like two small wings folded back, and when I finished he stood a long time with the paint still wet and said it was pointing somewhere I had not yet been.

I think about that now when I drive with the window down and the road bends under the heat. The post is still standing. The paint has faded again, but I know which way it points.
