Dreamcatcher and feather thigh garland

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A dangling garland of branches, feathers and a dreamcatcher runs across the thigh, with a larger peacock-style feather hanging from the central dreamcatcher. The linework is delicate and even, built from thin black lines with small dots and light hatching for shading. The design is entirely black ink on pale skin, with the subject shown against a plain light background and cropped at white shorts.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The hawthorn had to be cut before the light went, because Nell had learned that twigs left overnight dried stiff and would not bend for anyone. She knelt in the wet grass behind the Lowther barn with a bread knife and a bucket, sorting branches into the ones that would curl and the ones that would snap. Ruth, the bride, stood at the gate with her phone held high, arguing with someone called Dev about the seating plan.

The feathers came from three places. The pheasants had been the gamekeeper's gift, the wood pigeons were from the lane, and the single peacock feather was from a biscuit tin Ruth's gran had kept since 1958. Nell had woven the dreamcatcher from willow the night before, webbing it with cotton thread that was looser at the edges than she liked. Ruth wanted the peacock feather hanging from its centre so Gran could see it from the top table. Nell tied the knots and said nothing about the thread.

Alma arrived in her wheelchair just before the vows, and went straight to the garland without being wheeled there. She looked at the peacock feather for a long time. Then she said the eye on it was for keeping watch, not for luck, and asked whether she might tie it on herself. Her fingers shook on the thread. Nell held the hoop steady and let her do it, and when the knot held, Alma pressed her thumb flat against it the way you would seal an envelope.

After the speeches the lamps were lit, and the garland swung across the rafters in a draught from the open door. The peacock feather turned slowly on its thread, and its eye caught the light each time it came round to face the room.
