Family script and feathers on the ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo shows several shaded feathers arranged in a wing-like curve, with the word family written in flowing script across them. The feathers use soft grey shading and fine dark strokes to suggest texture, and one feather tip extends to the right. The photo is taken close up at an angle, with a grey hoodie and dark top visible at the edges of the frame.

The feather came out of the bunk mattress on the third night past Finisterre, a grey-brown thing with a quill as thin as a bootlace, and Mr Haddow took it off me as if I'd found a coin. "Gull," he said. "Or a pigeon off the Lisbon boat. Doesn't matter. Birds don't go to sea for the scenery."

Haddow had five children in Hull and a wife who wrote every Thursday in pencil, because ink ran in the damp. He kept her letters folded inside his oilskin and read them over when he thought the watch was asleep. He told me that feathers come loose from a bird in a curve, and once they're off you can't keep them in order, so you pick up what falls and you carry it.
We hit the storm off Ushant. The wheel kicked, the cargo shifted in the hold, and I lost my footing on the wet ladder. Haddow's fist closed on my collar and didn't let go until I was standing. Later, in the galley with the lamp swinging on its hook, he laid six feathers out on the table in a wing-shaped arc and wrote a word across them with a carpenter's pencil. The letters ran crooked wherever the ship rolled.
"That's where we are," he said, pushing the paper across to me. "Blown off in every direction and still the same shape." The longest feather on the end pointed east, toward Hull. He tapped it with the pencil. "Only compass I trust."
