Fancy script on upper chest

Lettering · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A person with long brown hair leans forward in a sequinned dress, with a small black script word reading fancy on the upper chest near the shoulder. The lettering is fine and lightly shaded in black ink, with no colour in the tattoo. The soft, bright composition includes gold studded bracelets, a gold ring and black thigh-high socks against a pale wall and sheer curtain.

Dear Vi,

Mrs Pyle came in again on Thursday with a bundle of green sequins wrapped in brown paper, and the word she wanted stitched inside the lining was fancy. Not fancy goods, she said, tapping the counter with her gloves, just fancy. I told her the lining was hardly the place for it. She said nobody would see it but the one who needed to, and that is the sort of answer people give once they have already paid.

I spent three evenings on the thing after the shop shut. The sequins were cheap Brighton stock, scooped from a tin, and they clattered every time I bent over the machine like coins in a coat pocket. By Saturday the green had gone the colour of the sea under the lamp, and I had the letters done in black thread, small and slanting, the way Father used to sign the ledger when he was in a hurry.

She came for the fitting on Monday. The wind off the front had got into the shop and she stood in the doorway a moment with the light behind her, not saying anything. Then she asked whether I thought the word was too much. I said no. Then I said I had never once in my life been called fancy by anyone, and she laughed so hard she had to sit down on the hatbox.

I am sending you the offcut of black thread so you can see how it looks against the green. Keep it. Come up at Whitsun if the bus is running, and bring your good scissors.

Love, Edie
