Small text tattoo on lower back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman seen from behind wears a gold beaded cropped top, light blue jeans and a black crossbody bag. Below the top, a small black tattoo of several lines of text sits on the lower back, with fine, thin lettering. The ink is black only and the photograph is a sharp, softly lit street shot against a pale wall.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mr Okonedo had been lettering shopfronts in Bristol for thirty-one years, and he still held a brush the way his father had taught him, with the handle resting on the bone at the base of the thumb. On Thursday the bride's mother came in with a folded card and a face like a closed door. She wanted a sentence painted on the inside of the glass of the church hall's back window, where the morning light would catch it. Three lines, she said. Small. Nothing fancy.

He read the card twice. It was a sentence about a river and a promise, written out in capitals that leaned as if they were in a hurry. He asked her to read it aloud, and she did, and her voice wobbled on the word "stay".

He painted it in reverse, because the glass was the only way it would ever be read properly from the street side. Each letter had to be flipped in his head before the brush touched down, and the hardest was the S, which he had to draw backwards in one breath. By the third line his wrist ached and the sun had slid off the pavement. He thought about the mother's face and could not have said why.

On Saturday the hall was full of people in hats, and the bride stood on the far side of the glass in a dress the colour of milk. She looked up at the window and read her sentence the right way round, through the pane, and laid one hand flat against it. Mr Okonedo, out in the car park with a flask, saw her lips move and did not need to hear the words.
