Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A close crop of a woman's upper torso showing a black ornamental mandala tattoo centred on the chest, with radiating petals, dots and small pointed motifs. The linework is fine and precise, with some solid fills and dotted detail, and the ink is a deep black against lightly toned skin. Black sheer lace lingerie sits at the left edge, and a hand with dark nail polish and rings rests at the right.

The 4.10 never stopped at Carrow Halt, so nobody thought to look at the frost on the waiting-room window. Old Dunstan the porter looked. Every morning in November he rubbed a clear patch with his thumb and found a rosette of ice, petals opening from a dark dot at the centre, small pointed barbs set between them like the tips of arrows.

He asked his wife, Maud, who said the frost belonged to the station and always had, the same as the iron bench and the smell of coal dust. He asked the signalman, who only said the lamp-room had been cold since his grandfather's time. Nobody else's windows grew such patterns. The booking hall glass stayed bare, and so did the platform gate, though it faced the same weather.

In the third week of the frost, a fog came down thick off the moor. The 6.40 slowed for the halt and the driver could not find the platform lamp, only a grey smudge where it should have been. Dunstan ran out with his storm lantern, but the fog swallowed the light before it reached the rails. Then he remembered the window. He carried his lantern back inside and set it against the glass, and the frost took the light and threw it out in a wide ring of sparks, petal after petal, as bright as a star.

The driver saw it through the murk, and he brought the engine in by that star as slow as a man walking. Dunstan never scraped the window clear again. Maud said that was the whole point of it.
