Black script lettering tattoo running down the outer upper arm of a person with blonde hair, who wears a jewelled corset.

Script tattoo on upper arm

Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A close view of a person from behind, leaning forward, with their face out of frame. A thin black handwritten script tattoo runs vertically down the outer upper arm, and the words are too small and soft to read clearly. The background is a soft-focus room, and the embellished black corset in the foreground dominates the composition.

The snow had shut the pass for nine days when the pedlar left his bolt of black cloth at the Crooked Hart and walked out again without his payment. Hester Lowe, who kept the inn's needles and mending, unrolled it across the kitchen table and found a box of glass stones tucked beneath it, hundreds of them, cut like frost on a window.

The innkeeper's daughter wanted a bodice for the midwinter dance, the only dance in the valley anyone bothered with. Hester sewed for six nights by the range. She set each stone with a single stitch, and before each one she pressed a pinch of pearl dust into the seam and wrote a letter on the lining, small enough to vanish under the next row. Nobody asked what she was writing. The girl only wanted to know whether the stones would fall off, and Hester said they would not, not before the thaw.

On the seventh morning the bodice was done and the snow had stopped falling. Hester turned the lining out to check her knots and read the words she had hidden there: stay until the road is clear, then choose. She had not known she was writing them until she saw them.

When the pedlar came back in April for his box, he found the bodice folded on top of it, lining out, the stitches showing like a map of a country he had never crossed. He read the hem, laughed, paid nothing, and sat down by the fire to wait for the girl to come down.
